What is Claw Toe?

Claw toe is a foot deformity where the toe bends into an unnatural claw-like shape. This occurs when the toe rises at the joint near the ball of the foot while curling downward at the middle and tip joints. As a result, the toe tucks under the foot, often leading to painful corns or calluses on the top of the toe or under the ball of the foot due to friction and pressure while walking.

Causes of Claw Toe

Claw toe can develop in any of the four smaller toes, often due to muscle imbalances caused by nerve damage. It may be present from birth or develop later in life due to conditions such as cerebral palsy, rheumatoid arthritis, or brain injuries. Women are more frequently affected than men, as wearing tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes can contribute to the condition.

Diagnosing Claw Toe

A diagnosis typically begins with a physical examination of the foot. If nerve-related issues are suspected, additional tests may be conducted to rule out underlying conditions that could be weakening the muscles in the foot.

Treatment Options for Claw Toe

In its early stages, claw toe is often managed with non-surgical approaches, including:

  • Stretching exercises to maintain flexibility in the toe joints

  • Wearing comfortable footwear with a wider toe box to reduce pressure

  • Splinting or taping to help realign the affected toe and improve positioning

If conservative treatments do not provide relief, surgical correction may be recommended to restore proper alignment and function. Addressing claw toe early can help prevent it from becoming more rigid and painful over time.
